The Sunday River Valley, Sunday River Ski Resort, and Bethel have been intertwined for decades as a distinct recreational area within the larger scope of the Western Maine Lakes and Mountains, unique for its world-class natural beauty and wildlife, as well as for its close proximity to many metropolitan areas. In fact, over 25 million people can reach Locke Summit Estates at Sunday River by automobile in less than a day. And in the recently released book, “101 Best Outdoor Towns: Unspoiled Places to Visit, Live, and Play”, Bethel was the only New England town to make the top 10!

The out-of-doors is the essence of the Western Maine way of life…and, once here, our visitors and guests have an unbelievable array of activities available to them WITHIN A DRIVE OF AN HOUR OR LESS – or by foot, boat, or wing. And when the active part of the day is done, the enjoyment isn’t; sit on your deck, with friends nearby and glass in hand, overlooking Ole Spec, the Mahoosuc Range and the nearby Appalachian Trail, the Sunday River or the beautiful Androscoggin River Valley.

Within that 1 hour? Take a look (and this is just the OUTDOORS part!)…
Speaks for itself. World-renowned Sunday River with its nationally acclaimed snowmaking and grooming is literally right next door and just downhill, cozy Mt. Abram is less than 15 minutes away, and 7 other areas (including Sugarloaf, Saddleback, Cannon and Wildcat) are easily day-trip-able.

check out Sunday River Golf Club, Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed golf course, which has received numerous national awards, including Travel and Leisure’s “Top 10 New Courses in the World”, Golf Digest’s “Top 10 Best New Upscale Public Courses”, Golfweek’s “#1 Course in Maine”, and Golfstyles New England “Public Course of The Year”. And Boyne/Sunday River’s stated goal is to add golf courses to the valley within just a few years. The economic impact? Nobody knows for sure, but it’s sure fun to think about.

That 1-hour drive? You can get to at least 8 more courses to play.

Both the nearby Sunday River Inn and the Bethel Inn and Country Club—about a 5-minute drive away - offer miles and miles of groomed cross-country skiing. Or you can just step out the door and start gliding on our hiking trails (take a lunch, a bottle of wine and head for Picnic Rock, right on the property).

There are numerous places to experience the relaxation and excitement of Western Maine’s streams and rivers: The Androscoggin, The Saco, The Swift, The Rapid, and others. Lake canoeing is virtually limitless. Rangeley, Mooselookmeguntic, Richardson, and Umbagog Lakes are among the best canoeing lakes in the world—if you can’t find a moose there, they must be allergic to you. Just across the road from our entrance gate is Sun Valley Sports. With Registered Maine Guides, complete knowledge of the area, guided tours and rentals, they will take you to places you’ve only dreamed of.

It’s everywhere: just outside your own door on your own trails through Locke Summit, on Mt. Will (just across the road), on the Appalachian Trail just a few minutes away in awesome Grafton Notch State park, on the new and highly-acclaimed Grafton Loop Trail, at charming Step Falls, and in beautiful Evans Notch. And the world-famous Pesidentials are just that one hour away.

Fly fishing on any of the rivers listed above, lake fishing on the Rangeley’s, Sebago, Kezar or Long Lake – all with public boat access – anglers can go for brookies and browns, salmon, small-mouth bass or togue (I’ve seen ‘em over 15 pounds, but can’t tell you where.)

Maine’s inland lakes are legendary: clean, clear, surrounded by mountains and pine forests, and while the ocean beach water temperature is in the mid-60’s, our lakes are in the mid- to high-70’s. Swim, water-ski, tube, windsurf or sail on any of our many public-access lakes, some up to 20 miles long.

Road or mountain?...take your pick! There are abundant opportunities for both, either on a recreational or more serious level. Boyne management has re-opened Sunday River’s lift serviced trails for mountain bikers, and there are many options for road bikers to wind their way through the gorgeous scenery of the notches and/or the lakesides.

Locke Summit Estates is the ONLY subdivision in the Sunday River Valley with direct access to the ITF snowmobile trail network. The developers have worked to ensure that access to the trail system is continued and outdoor enthusiasts can continue to indulge in their passion.
